I decided to choose the kiwi bird as my topic of research because before there were any people in New Zealand there were only birds. Therefore a kiwi is something old related to New Zealand culture. It is also the national icon of New Zealand.
It is easy to find out information about the kiwi on the internet. There are lots of interesting websites on this topic. I particularly liked this recording of a kiwi bird calling its mate.
I knew, however, that the tasks required us to go out into the community and find out information, preferably by speaking to someone so I decided to arrange a trip to Auckland museum to find out some history about my topic. I went there with some friends and we booked a tour so we would be able to talk to someone to find out information. Here is a photo of us at the front of the museum.
There was quite a lot
information on the kiwi at the museum. The tour guide showed us
different kinds of kiwis. The kiwi's egg was really amazing! Here are
some photos I took:
It was a good day out and I learned quite a lot of information about the kiwi. It was especially interesting to find out that kiwis' nostrils are at the end of their beaks. I'm looking forward to telling my classmates about it!
I also found out that there are kiwis at Auckland zoo, and also on Tiri Tiri Matangi Island, a short boat trip from Auckland, so I'm planning visits to both those places. Click here to go to the Tiri Tiri website.
